Jobs For College Students

This is a bit off-topic in that this site is more likely to be serving adults seeking higher learning degrees but I thought that by providing  this post it might start your mind thinking towards what jobs you can be doing while you’re taking classes,  that might help with more than your pocket book.

Library Assistant – A great way to learn your way around one of the most important resources a college student will employ on a regular basis. Yes the internet offers many of the same things that you can find in a library but there aren’t a lot of internet assistant jobs around.  Plus you’ll have no excuse for not going to the library when you should have because you’ll already be there.

Average pay is $8 to $12 per hour

Work From Home On The Internet – It is true that there is no such thing as a job being an internet assistant but there are jobs you can get that let you work from home. Customer support jobs are available,  do a search on your favorite engine and then after you find a couple of places that look interesting to you,  do some further research before you jump into the water,  and make sure there are no hidden dangers below the surface such as the place having a bad reputation for not paying its employees.  There are legit opportunities and there are not, and a little research will go a long way into helping you avoid the worst of the places.

Average pay is $12+ an hour

Tutoring

If you have some special skill or just are pretty good at some subjects,  you can put up a notice at your college for tutoring in that area which you are good at,  or as mentioned if you have a special skill such as playing a musical instrument you could teach those skills to those who are wanting to learn,  and charge a price for doing so.

Average pay is $10 – $15 an hour.

Computer Lab Assistant
If you know your way around computers and are planning to learn more,  why not seek a job as a computer lab assistant. This is a job which the college where you are attending, is likely some employment,  as well as other schools in the area may have an  opening.

Average pay between $8 –$12 per hour.

Food And Beverage Server

Something probably half the people alive,  have done at one time or another,  if not for an hourly wage,  then certainly at home for your family. Best of perks about this type of job besides the fact you’ll probably be fed for free or low cost,  is that this job is flexible. While it is true there are 3 main times a day when such a job is needed in full force,  it is just as true that people eat at all times and therefore you can find employment at nearly any hour of the day for this endeavor.

Average pay between $5-$8 per hour and hopefully you’ll make plenty on  tips

Child Care

Anybody good with kids,  can do this job. While it isn’t as flexible as some of the other choices,  it is a job which is widely available in almost any place you can  find people.  It may take working at a reputable establishment to gain reference, but once done,  you can almost always find employment.  For those seeking a job in the area of teaching,  this will also make a nice addition to your resume’ when the time comes.

Average pay is $10 -$15 per hour.

Student Loan Rate For Example

This is a student loan figured using a loan calculator.  I used twenty thousand as a base number and figured roughly seven percent and paid back over 10 years time at a rate of $237 minimum payment.  (That was what it said the minimum payment would be).

According to the calculator the minimum salary a person is going to need is around $25,000 – 35,000 a year to pay off the above scenario and live a life which is frugal but not so much as to be at a level below what you are likely living now (or in other words, at a level above or beyond poverty where you could afford to consider going to a higher learning school).

The total interest paid will be around $7,000.

The most economical approach that is likely to succeed is to seek a bachelor degree taking out a loan of around $5,000 per year, to have the best and most comfortable approach for paying back the loan. This based on a five year degree course.

Computer scientists will make slightly better income their first years in comparison to someone with a liberal arts degree for example, so they can afford to perhaps budget for having a little more. *Thus the $10,000 difference in minimum level income noted.  They said the computer scientist can expect to get the higher end of the deal.

For Profit Colleges Investigated

There may not be a better time to be shopping for an online education than now since it would seem reasonable to assume that with all the government investigation into for-profit schools of higher learning,  that if they were ever watching themselves to not step over the line, that it would be now, when they are aware that legal eyes are scrutinizing their actions.

..

Allow me to explain the above statement. Schools that are under investigation such as University of Phoenix and fourteen lesser-known for profit colleges (which are named in one of the blog posts here);  actually have the best accreditation possible. Phoenix is joined with several other names including Strayer Online College,

Accrediting Agency Coverage of States

These are the respective accrediting agency’s area of coverage.

Remember if it isn’t one of these 6 accrediting agencies then the credits may not be transferable to a college that is accredited by one of the following agencies.

Perhaps better said, these are the only department of Education approved accrediting agencies for regional accreditation. So if the college isn’t accredited by one of the following 6,  it is best to choose a different college. Here are the big 6.

1. Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools -  New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands, as well as schools for American children in Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.

2. New England Association of Schools and Colleges – Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont.

3. North Central Association of Colleges and Schools – Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, Michigan, Minnesota,  North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, New Mexico, South Dakota, Wisconsin, West Virginia, and Wyoming.

4. Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities – Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington.

5. Western Association of Schools and Colleges – California, Hawaii, Guam, American Samoa, Micronesia, Palau, and Northern Marianas Islands.

6. Southern Association of Colleges and Schools – Virginia, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Tennessee and Texas.

Student Loans

Student Loans are an area where you should be learning all you can if you are going to be taking a loan to pay for your education.

..

Specific to point out is what happens if you fail your courses? Do you still have to pay back your loans?

..

The short answer is yes you do have to pay back any loan taken out unless it was with your parents and they told you not to worry about it.  If you took the student loan from the government then rest assured they will be in touch to get their money whether or not you pass your classes.

..

The thing to avoid with utmost prejudice is  paying off the loans while still stuck in the same old job because you couldn’t pass the courses.

..

If necessary the government will take their “interest” out of your paycheck every week before you can even get the check in the form of garnishment. *Also note that in most instances it will only take the amount of interest owed on the principal which means you’d be paying the rest of your life.

..

People falling into this category are dubbed as being “debt slaves” because they are caught in a never-ending cycle of garnishment = having to leave that job to find one that isn’t being garnished + never having a job that pays enough to allow you to pay-off those student loans because you’re constantly being forced to find new employment.
