Fraud and online education are not strangers to each other.
Potential students should understand that while these colleges are accredited by a recognized association, it doesn’t mean they are all that and a bag of chips. What I mean by that is the colleges will do almost anything to get your signature on the dotted line, and a recent investigation proved that includes (in some cases) encouraging potential students to hide money they had in savings and in one case they encouraged a potential student to lie and claim three dependents which did not exist.
University of Phoenix, Kaplan University, and Argosy University were three of the more recognized schools to be named in an undercover investigation by the U.S. government which revealed unscrupulous business tactics and out right fraud in some cases.
Kaplan University stopped taking admissions at campuses located in Florida, and California until an in-house investigation was completed.
Here are some results of the investigation.
• Four colleges encouraged applicants to commit financial aid fraud.
• Of fifteen schools investigated, all were guilty of some form of deceptive or questionable marketing.
• Costs were obscured while at same time resources were overstated.
•14 of the 15 schools were charging higher prices than those of community non-profit colleges.
• High-pressure sales tactics were used.
• Some counselors did provide accurate information.
Schools named were: University of Phoenix, Kaplan, Potomac College, Bennett Career Institute, MedVance Institute, the College of Office Technology, Everest, Westech, Argosy, Westwood, Anthem Institute and ATI Career Training.
*This site wishes to once again acknowledge that the online colleges noted above, in the case of those listed on this site, are accredited and the degree is considered valid and valuable. What is in question is the approach the colleges used in gaining students. At no time has the quality of education been in question.
These are the six recognized associations for accrediting schools in the United States. If the college of your choice does not have accreditation from one of the following organizations then it is a bad choice unless you are just seeking a degree for your own personal satisfaction.
In other words, no employer or government agency is going to look at a degree from a college which is not accredited by one of these six entities.

University of Phoenix and Strayer Online, both for profit, online schools, are accredited by the same organization which awards accreditation to John Hopkins, Kansas State University and the the United States Air Force Academy.
